Article Word Count: 557

Gone are the days when the kitchen merely functions as the area where the family meals are prepared. It has emerged to be the hub of family activities! The modern kitchen has evolved to an area where the family cooks, eats, make their plans, organize and pay household bills, entertain friends and close relatives and the area where the kids do their homework, to name just a few. Indeed, most kitchens have taken on a multi-functional role with the passing of time!

With the multitude of tasks being done in the modern day kitchen, it is but proper to have this space designed accordingly. After all, you spend much of your time in your kitchen don’t you? And what would be better than providing this room with a unique character – something that you can really be proud of for years to come? To do this right, you should start with the most fundamental and prominent elements in your kitchen – the cabinets, countertops and flooring.

Of these three main kitchen elements, the cabinets undeniably capture the center stage. Why? It is because cabinets are simply the most important and also the most expensive component of the kitchen. Having a new set of kitchen cabinets installed can definitely cost you a bundle, so to speak. To help you in choosing the best cabinet options that will fit the design and function of your kitchen, you might want to consider these things:

•Determine the amount and type of storage that you need. Carefully consider where you want your cabinets to be placed (above or below the countertop), whether you need wide or narrow shelves and other specific details.

•Choose the style of cabinets that you want. Do you want to go for a traditional style or be more adventurous and choose a more contemporary design? Or would you rather settle for a style somewhere in between these two?

•Determine what material will be used for your kitchen cabinets. Would you rather choose wood over laminate cabinets or would it be the other way around? To help you make a wiser decision, consider comparing the properties of the two before making the final verdict.

Wood Cabinets - Most homeowners tend to favor wood over laminate cabinets. If you decide on installing wood cabinets, you can be sure that there will always be a perfect one for your kitchen. With wood cabinets, choice is never limited. Whether your main criteria for choosing a cabinet relies on price, material, style or finish, rest assure that there will always be a lot to choose from. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, maple is considered as the most popular wood used in kitchen cabinets, with oak, cherry and pine tailing closely behind.

Laminate Cabinets - If you are in a tight budget, however, you can opt to go for laminate cabinets. Laminate cabinets are considerably more budget-friendly, durable, easier to maintain and they also come in various designs and finishes. If you ever tire of your existing laminate cabinet and want to change the look of your kitchen, you can simply have them resurfaced and you will have a fresher-looking kitchen in no time!
